Overview of Existing Structure:
Yalca
The State Government and the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI) have a partnership arrangement, based on equality and respect, regarding Koori education issues as evidenced by Yalca: A Partnership in Education and Training for the New Millennium.
Yalca places the Koori student at the centre of education policy and decision making and acknowledges that local Koori communities through Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups (LAECG) are best able to determine local education and training needs. In addition, Yalca acknowledges the need and provides the framework to develop and implement collaborative initiatives and strategies across departments and agencies for the benefit of the Koori community. For further information go to: www.vaeai.org.au/policy/pdf/vaeai_policy.pdf
Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (LAECG)
LAECGs are recognised as equal partners in the development, implementation and evaluation of education and training at the local level.
LAECGs fulfil a significant role in providing the links between Koorie communities, the VAEAI structures, Government departments and education and training institutions. They are best placed to provide local perspectives on education and training matters and hightlight the needs and aspirations of local Koorie communites.
Regional Koorie Education Committee (RKEC)
Eight RKECs are located across Victoria with representation from Local Education Consultative Groups and the Department of Education and Training. The Committees are allocated funding to implement regional Koorie education programs and identify strategies to address regional Koorie education issues.
Koorie Educator
A Koorie Educator is allocated to schools with high numbers of Koorie students to provide support to Koorie students in the classroom and to act as a liaison between schools and families of Koorie students. Koorie educators play a valuable role in contributing to improved attendance and retention levels of Koorie students.
There is one Koorie Educator in EMR who supports students at Healesville High School , Healesville Primary School and Badger Creek Primary School.
Koorie Education Development Officer (KEDO)
Rhonda Dye supports and promotes the implementation of Koorie Education Policy with a particular focus on the provision of curriculum and professional development support to schools. Rhonda also participates in the planning, development and coordination of Koorie education programs.
