Better understanding of English

Learning a LOTE encourages and enables students to compare how various languages are organised and so gains a deeper understanding of English as a language system. By using cross-linguistic strategies, learning in both English and the LOTE are enhanced.

Communication

The language classroom provides students with opportunities to practice listening, speaking, reading for overall meaning and working with partners to complete a task.

Culture

Students learning a LOTE also learn about culture embedded in the language. They explore specific practices and products of a culture, and draw comparisons with their own cultural experience. It is found that students who learn about another culture are more likely to value other ways of thinking and behaving and are developing their thinking skills, sensitivity and understanding.

Linking to other domains

Learning to use a LOTE requires a topic or context to talk, read and communicate about. These contexts create natural links between LOTE and other learning areas such as mathematics, the arts, science and other disciplines. Student learning outcomes are enhanced through LOTE links to other domains, including Personal Learning, Problem Solving and Creative Thinking.

With globalisation, intercultural understanding and skills in other languages has been identified as the essential skills for effective participation in the workforce. This was recognised in the Curriculum Framework where LOTE was identified as one of the eight key learning areas and has been reaffirmed by the continued inclusion of LOTE as one of the domains in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards.
